Beschreibung

The research group proposes to design and develop geography assessment items for a Trends in International Geography Assessment Study (TIGAS). TIGAS will be an international comparative assessment study of student proficiency in geography, thereby adding an important school subject to the field of international assessment studies such as the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), the Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS), and the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS).

The proposed research will advance knowledge of how competency over geographic subject matter can be assessed in a manner that enables comparisons of what students in different countries know and are able to do as an outcome of studying geography. Over time, trend data on student proficiency in geography will provide an empirical foundation for researchers to probe more deeply into the factors influencing variance in geographic literacy within and between the participating countries.
